Green Attraction
Green Attraction is an environmental labeling scheme for Danish attractions, including museums and art halls. To be certified as a Green Attraction, an institution must work to reduce its CO₂ emissions and meet specific requirements within areas such as water and energy consumption and waste sorting. Additionally, the certification sets standards for environmental management, employee involvement, procurement policies, and the selection of products in museum cafés and shops. For museums, there are also special requirements regarding exhibitions, storage facilities, and curatorial tasks.
The three Copenhagen institutions are part of the museum cluster Art & History under the Culture and Leisure Administration of the City of Copenhagen, which—through an ambitious environmental and procurement policy—has set a clear goal of reducing the energy and resource consumption of municipal institutions.
“Sustainability has been a focus area for us in 2024. Green Attraction is a wonderful recognition of the work we’ve done, but also—and perhaps even more importantly—a stepping stone for all of us in the continued journey toward green transformation. It has been an eye-opening process for both management and staff, and the engagement and ambition to become more sustainable does not stop with the certification,” says Marius Hansteen, Museum Director, Art & History.
At the same time the Green Attraction process began, Art & History launched the nationwide project “Circular Exhibition Practices” at the beginning of the year. This project offers concrete suggestions on how the exhibition industry can incorporate circular systems and design principles into daily communication work. The experiences from this initiative will be broadly shared across the sector next year in collaboration with the Museums’ Green Academy.
In addition, Nikolaj Kunsthal has, together with the Danish Arts Foundation, contributed to developing a Danish version of Creative Green Tools. Copenhagen Museum is also involved in a larger project on the development of climate-neutral storage facilities and has participated in the widely discussed project “CopenPay”, which nudges the city’s tourists toward more sustainable behavior.
Facts about Green Attraction
Green Attraction was established in collaboration between:
- Danish Zoos & Aquariums (DAZA)
- Organization of Danish Museums (ODM)
- Association of Amusement Parks in Denmark (FFD)
- Science and Experience Centers (VPAC)
- HORESTA (the trade association for the hospitality industry)
HORESTA launched Green Attraction in 2022, focusing specifically on attractions.
Green Attraction is awarded to attractions that go the extra mile to be environmentally friendly and care for the environment. All Green Attraction-certified venues must meet a wide range of criteria for environmentally conscious operations.
A Green Attraction minimizes chemical use, reduces energy and water consumption, and ensures clear and effective waste sorting.
Certified attractions must document that they meet the criteria and undergo control visits before certification. They are continuously encouraged to do more and are regularly monitored with follow-up inspections.
