The City Beneath the City – Archaeologists Open the Gate to the Past

– an event for both children and adults

Beneath the streets of Copenhagen lie the remains of buildings that disappeared from the cityscape long ago. As part of the CaFx architecture biennale, the Archaeological Workshop invites you on a fascinating journey into the city's hidden layers.

Here, you can explore everything from massive foundations and large medieval bricks to columns, sculptures, and decorative elements from city gates, monasteries, and churches – architectural remnants that today leave no trace above ground. The archaeologists present original building fragments, old maps, and excavation photos, sharing the stories these findings reveal: What the buildings looked like, who used them, and how they fit into Copenhagen’s architectural history.

The event offers a unique glimpse into the Copenhagen of the past – seen through the eyes of archaeologists.

Entrance to the Archaeological Workshop is free, when you have a ticket for the Museum of Copenhagen. Free entrance for children (up to 18), when going with an adult.

No sign up necessary - just drop by during Museum opening hours.
